Reading - Students will be reading various types of genre trade books. We will dig deeper into fiction and nonfiction stories. While reading these trade books, we will practice reading skills. In fiction, we will focus on answering questions with text evidence, character traits, theme in various genres, and retelling/summarizing. In nonfiction, we will focus on answering questions with text evidence. text features, main idea, finding key details, and summarizing. We will complete three novel studies this year. These include Charlotte's Web, The One and Only Ivan, and Titanic: Fact Tracker. Spelling and Vocabulary will be combined this year. Words will come from Sadlier-Oxford Vocabulary Workshop. The group of words will be used for spelling one week and vocabulary the next.

Writing/Grammar – We will be focusing on the 3 types of writing; narrative, information, and entertainment. These include research projects on animals and historical figures, a diary narrative entry on a person who was on the Titanic, and a comparison article on Hurricane and Tornadoes to name a few. Grammar will be integrated in writing lessons daily. We will learn parts of speech and sentence structure.

Social Studies - We will be working through 5 units of social studies. The main theme of all 5 is Communities. These include Living in Communities, Look Back at the Past, Building a Government, Communities on the Move, and Working Together. We use research and guided notes to explore these ideas.
