Get Ready for Back-to-School!

Our school counselor, Mrs. Wuebben, has some easy ideas to help your child get set for school.

As we prepare for the new school year, a little planning can go a long way in making your Viking feel confident and excited about returning to school. It is normal to feel a mix of emotions when starting a new school year but with preparation, support, and encouragement, your Viking will be ready to shine. Wishing you and your family a great start to the school year!

Here are a few simple but important ways you can ensure a smooth transition:

 1. Packet Pick Up to Practice Navigating the School

Take advantage of packet pick up days to help your child find their classroom, specials classrooms, bathrooms, main office, and practice opening their locker. Knowing where to go on the first day can ease a lot of nerves and build confidence.

2. Ease Into a Healthy Sleep Routine

Begin transitioning to your school sleep schedule a few days before school starts. Children are better able to learn, manage emotions, and focus when they are well rested. Keep up with healthy sleep hygiene during the school year helps maintain those benefits.

3.  Plan a Playdate With a Classmate

Schedule a playdate with a classmate close to the first day of school. Having a familiar face in the classroom can help your child feel more connected, confident, and less nervous on the first day.

4. Practice Drop-Off and Talk Through the Routine

If your child is feeling anxious, practice your drop-off routine in advance. Walk them through what drop-off and pick-up will look like. Predictability helps reduce stress in new situations. Feel free to use packet pick up day to practice the route!

5. Talk Positively About School

Young children often mirror emotions of their parents for new situations. If they hear calm, excited, and positive messages about school from the adults in their life,  they are more likely to feel the same. Speak confidently about teachers, classmates, and all the fun they’ll have learning new things this year. Ask questions about what they are excited for this year, who they hope they have a class with, what they are most looking forward to.
