Mrs. Elizabeth Barker

Welcome to Fifth Grade!

I am so excited to have the opportunity to teach English, Language Arts, and Social Studies this year at Villa! I look forward to sharing my love of reading with the students as we set reading goals and explore different genres and authors. We will focus on strengthening comprehension skills and vocabulary and making inferences as we read a variety of middle school novels. The students really enjoy reading and discussing popular books with their classmates! In writing, we will also practice with various types of writing including journals, narratives, informational writing, and poetry. We will learn the importance of using formal writing when needed and writing to learn when taking notes or writing for personal use. Students will continue to improve their grammar skills through targeted practice and in the course of analyzing and editing their own writing and that of their peers.

In Social Studies, we will begin with geography and factors that influenced ancient civilizations and move to explorers and settlements, the thirteen colonies, and the Revolutionary War. Students will be assigned a longer term project that will include a research paper and a creative element to be completed mostly outside of class and presented to classmates. This is a great opportunity for students to work independently and manage their time. I am looking forward to a wonderful year!
